About the Artist

A Stone Sculptor's Biography
Creating contemplative stone sculpture for public space
Yoshikawa is a nationally recognized Japanese/American stone sculptor known for creating contemplative, site-responsive sculptures for public, civic and natural environments. His work explores the relationship between permanence and change, inviting moments of pause, reflection and quiet awareness within shared spaces.
His connection to stone began at the University of Colorado and was deepened through an apprenticeship in the historic stone quarries of Shodoshima, Japan. There, he was immersed in centuries-old traditions that emphasize respect for material, precision of craft and a collaborative dialogue between artist and stone. This foundation continues to inform his approach to large-scale, durable works intended to weather time and environment with integrity.
Yoshikawa's public artworks are characterized by simplicity of form, refined surface and a sensitivity to site. Rather than relying on literal representation, his sculptures integrate organically into their surroundings, allowing meaning to emerge through proportion, texture, light and spatial presence. His work often functions as a quiet counterpoint within active public spaces - offering a place of stillness, orientation and human scale.
With extensive experience in stone sourcing, carving, engineering coordination and installation, Yoshikawa has completed projects for public parks, civic landscapes and private institutions throughout the United States. He works closely with architects, landscape designers, engineers and fabricators to ensure that each sculpture is structurally sound, environmentally appropriate and responsive to community context.
At its core, Yoshikawa's practice is guided by the belief that art in public space can serve as a grounding presence - one that does not instruct or dominate but invites engagement, contemplation and a deeper awareness of place.
